Canon expands photovoltaic plant in Poing

Third construction phase completed – total PV output increases to over 2.2 MWp

Poing, 30. June 2025 – It was an ambitious project right from the start and Canon Production Printing GmbH & Co. KG is pursuing it unwaveringly – the photovoltaic system at the Poing site. Following the installation on the production halls (2019) and the ancillary operating zones (2021), the third phase of the project was completed at the end of May 2025. In addition to the modules on the roof surfaces, a façade system is now also generating sustainable energy vertically on the air conditioning systems of the office buildings for the first time. The PV modules and installation material were lifted onto the roofs of the office buildings and the canteen in winter 2024/25 using a mobile construction crane.

With the latest expansion, the plant will achieve a total output of over 2.2 megawatts peak (MWp) in future – an increase of 402 kilowatts peak (kWp). Canon in Poing will then have a total of 6,588 solar modules – making it one of the largest roof systems in the greater Munich area. “When planning the project, we already had the goal of being able to cover at least 20 percent of our annual electricity requirements with our own generation,” says Stefan Speer, who is responsible for the large-scale project. “Now we can even achieve 25 percent!” he proudly announces.

Proud to save CO2

However, the primary project goal is to achieve significant CO2 savings. This was already achieved in 2019 with the installation on the production halls – since then, around 4,500 tons of CO2 have already been saved.

“At Canon Production Printing, we have a long-standing and well-established commitment to sustainability. We are continuously working to reduce the environmental impact of our manufacturing processes, our products and all Canon company sites,” explains Stefan Speer, project manager for the construction of the PV system at Canon Production Printing.

The new modules on the roofs of the office buildings and the canteen are elevated with a 10degree angle of inclination and an east-west orientation. With this constellation, the plant in Poing can use most of the energy generated itself. The installation is being implemented by the Munich-based company ECOtecc GmbH, with whom the company has been working since 2019. The direct marketing of the surplus energy is handled by the local energy provider EBERwerk GmbH & Co. KG.

Innovative and forward-thinking

The project managers at Canon laid the foundations for the project in 2019 with anticipatory planning and appropriate technical execution. This avoids technical risks from the outset, as the production halls are ultimately home to highly sensitive manufacturing. “When selecting the installer, we placed a particular focus on regional value creation and support for local structures. This was one of the reasons for awarding the contracts to ECOtecc and EBERwerk, the municipal energy supplier in the district,” says Speer.

“Responsibility for the environment has always been one of the hallmarks of our business activities,” adds Johann Meyer, Managing Director of Canon Production Printing, Poing.  “Because we are convinced that protecting the environment is essential, not least for the well-being of our company. We constantly endeavor to improve our environmental performance and minimize our environmental impact as much as possible. We are therefore delighted to be able to take a further step towards achieving our Group-wide sustainability goals with our photovoltaic project.”
